Tuesday night at the HI-FI Annex in Fountain Square, the Canadian ensemble Broken Social Scene graced the outdoor stage to commemorate the 20th anniversary of their acclaimed second album, “You Forgot It In People.” Throughout the performance, the band harnessed the chaos of connectivity as a driving force. The band has a few dates left in October on the current tour at The Pageant in St. Louis and the Brooklyn Bowl in Nashville. The band will perform at The Concert Hall in Toronto, ON in December.

On September 23, Farm Aid took place at Ruoff Music Center in Noblesville, IN, featuring the guiding board members Willie Nelson, John Mellencamp, Dave Matthews, Margo Price, and the return of Neil Young. The event also boasted an unexpected late-night performance by Bob Dylan with the Heartbreakers.
Sturgill Simpson and Lukas Nelson sat in with Bobby Weir & Wolf Bros featuring The Wolfpack, offering memorable performances of “Truckin'” and “Dark Star.” To conclude their set, Margo Price joined them for a cover of The Crickets’ “Not Fade Away.” Price later graced the stage alongside special guest Sturgill Simpson for a fantastic rendition of Tom Petty’s “Mary Jane’s Last Dance.” The festivities continued with Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds, who opened their set with a rendition of Tex Ritter’s “Rye Whiskey.” The acoustic guitar duo followed this with a lineup of songs, including “Satellite,” “So Damn Lucky,” “Virginia in the Rain,” “Lie in Our Graves,” “Monsters,” and concluded their performance with the crowd-favorite, “Crush” as the sun was setting on the beautiful day of music.
John Mellencamp’s set included many hits, such as “Paper in Fire,” “Small Town,” and “Jack & Daine,” one particularly poignant moment was when Mellencamp delivered his 1985 track, “Rain on the Scarecrow.” The song vividly portrays the anguish experienced by farmers forced off their land, a theme deeply intertwined with the inception of Farm Aid. Reflecting on the enduring battle for family farmers, Mellencamp remarked, “None of us could have imagined, in our most optimistic dreams, that 38 years down the road, we would still be committed to, and in fact, compelled to continue this vital work.” Mellencamp concluded his set with an electrifying performance of “Pink Houses.”
Neil Young made his return to the Farm Aid stage, treating the audience to a four-song set featuring “Comes a Time,” “Are There Any More Real Cowboys?,” “Love Earth,” and “Heart of Gold.”
The grand finale was orchestrated by Willie Nelson, who delivered an impressive 18-song performance. To cap off the evening in style, Willie Nelson invited Neil Young, John Mellencamp, Dave Matthews, Margo Price, Bob Weir, and other special guests to join him on stage for a heartfelt rendition of “Will the Circle Be Unbroken/I’ll Fly Away” and brought the event to a close with “It’s Hard to be Humble.”

The Warning, a rock band consisting of three sisters from Monterrey, Mexico, stopped at the Deluxe at Old National Centre in Indianapolis, Indiana. The band was formed in 2013, and its members are Daniela Villarreal on lead vocals and guitar, Paulina Villarreal on drums, and Alejandra Villarreal on bass guitar are on the road with their ERROR Tour. Claire Rosinkranz made a stop on her current mini-run on the Just Because Tour in the Deluxe Room at the Old National Centre on Tuesday night. Claire and opener Ella Jane both were coming off stops in Chicago for Lollapoolza weekend. Thursday night at the Ruoff Music Center was the stage for the Gov’t Mule’s Dark Side of the Mule and Jason Bonham’s Led Zeppelin Evening. Warren Haynes and his band took the fans back in rock and roll history to experience “Dark Side of the Mule,” a tribute to Pink Floyd, as did the opener Jason Bonham with his tribute to his late father, John Bonham’s band Led Zeppelin.
Jason Bonham set the mood for the evening of rock nostalgia with an hour-long run time of Zed Zeppelin classics. Haynes and his band kicked off their set with Mule classics. Then the real enchantment unfolded during the second set when they embarked on a profound journey through the vast and captivating universe of Pink Floyd. The extended second set was a mesmerizing odyssey, taking the eager crowd through the wondrous realms of Floydian radiance.

Wilco has announced their upcoming album Cousin, featuring the lead single “Evicted,” set to release on September 29 via dBpm. This album marks a significant moment for the band, as it’s the first time they’ve worked with an outside producer since “Sky Blue Sky.” Cate Le Bon largely produced the album, and her collaboration with Wilco started after she met the band at their Solid Sound Festival in 2019. Frontman Jeff Tweedy invited her to the band’s Chicago studio, the Loft, in 2022 to begin working on “Cousin.”
Regarding the collaboration, Cate Le Bon expressed her admiration for Wilco’s versatility and authenticity. She praised their ability to embrace different genres and musical styles while maintaining consistent authenticity throughout their work. Before the album’s release, Wilco is set to embark on an exciting tour in Europe and the United Kingdom during August and September. They will return to the United States for tour dates in September and October, accompanied by My Brightest Diamond and Nina Nastasia. Last night I caught Big Thief on their Dragon New Warm Mountain I Believe in You tour. The last time I had seen the band perform live was in 2017 at the Solid Sound Music Festival at MASS MoCA in North Adams, MA. So I knew the show would be a treat to catch in my backyard at the Egyptian Room at Old National Centre.
The Brooklyn, New York-based opener Nick Hakim was a perfect fit with his soulful, moody delivery. Be sure to check him out opening for Reyes Blood at the Vogue on August 29, later this summer.
My favorite moment was the performance of Change during the encore. The crowd was still as Adrianne Lenker sang quietly about embracing the inevitable changes in life, including death. It was such a moving performance that I wouldnโt soon forget.

Farm Aid 2023 will bring together a full day of music, family farmers, and delicious food to the Ruoff Music Center on Saturday, September 23. The event will feature captivating performances by renowned artists who also happen to be Farm Aid board members: the legendary Willie Nelson, the iconic Neil Young, Seymour, Indiana native John Mellencamp, Dave Matthews (accompanied by Tim Reynolds), and Margo Price. Joining them on stage will be Bobby Weir & Wolf Bros featuring The Wolfpack, Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats, Lukas Nelson, Allison Russell, The String Cheese Incident, and the Particle Kid.
The festival will highlight the work of family farmers to address climate change through regenerative, organic, and sustainable farming practices. Farm Aid will showcase these innovative climate champions on the Farm Aid stage and throughout the event. As farmers and farm and food advocates converge from across the country for the annual festival, Farm Aid will host additional pre-festival events to spotlight their work.
This is the third Farm Aid concert that has taken place in Indiana and the second in Noblesville. Farm Aid IV took place at the Hoosier Dome in Indianapolis in 1990, and Farm Aid 2001: A Concert for America was held in Noblesville.
Reflecting on the upcoming event, Farm Aid President and Founder Willie Nelson expressed, “Family farmers hold the solutions to some of our toughest challenges. In the face of a changing climate, farmers in Indiana, the Midwest, and all across the country are adopting farming practices that foster resilient farms, nurture healthy soils, and safeguard our water.”

The WonderRoad Music Festival returned for its second edition in Garfield Park in Indianapolis, IN, on June 17-18, 2023. Building on the success of its debut in 2022, WonderRoad showcased over 25 acts across three stages, creating a vibrant and inclusive outdoor music event.
The 2023 lineup featured seasoned rock bands at the helm, with Weezer headlining on Saturday and Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit headlining on Sunday. Weezer’s electrifying set had the crowd singing along to their hit-packed setlist. In comparison, Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit sleepy headlining performance was outshined by a passionate set from Marcus King.
On Saturday, some standout sets included the high-energy performance by Coin, and the Local Natives’ symphonic tones caught the attention of my ear. Of course, the highly anticipated Weezer closing set did not disappoint.
Marcus King’s powerful southern rock performance mesmerized the Father’s Day Sunday crowd, while Tegan and Sara’s mid-day set blended some audience favorites with new tunes. Of course, the set was filled with their trademark humorous banter. Meg Myers’s raw and emotionally charged presence on the stage was captivating. Sunday also featured crowd engagement as a highlight, as artists like Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness and Michael Franti ventured into the audience, bringing an extra touch of intimacy to their performances.
In summary, despite some audio technical difficulties on both the main stages, the 2023 WonderRoad Music Festival offered a blend of musical talent and food over the Father’s Day weekend. The festival’s laid-back ambiance and great location have me looking forward to the next edition.
