Day two of Solid Sound Festival jammed packed lineup included a variety of kid actives, artist signings, ax throwing, pop-up performances, yoga, plenty of food options, art, and of course a ton of live music.

A few personal standout sets included Mdou Moctar‘s performance in Courtyard C as he played his blend of contemporary Saharan music with mesmerizing loops all the while shredding with a joyful smile. Another fantastic set in Courtyard C was Chicago based OHMME. The rendition of the title track from 2018 release Parts echoed hauntingly throughout the open spaced courtyard setting.

The Minus Five impressive lineup lead by Scott McCaughey‘s included Kurt Bloch, Linda Pitmon, Joe Adragna, and Mike Mills & Peter Buck of R.E.M. Even the Dream Syndicate’s Steve Wynn joined the group for a couple of tunes in the jammed packed Courtyard D.

Tortoise the Chicago based instrumental quintet played a regular set after their Friday night performance in the Hunter Center where they performed a live score to the silent sci-fi film Le Jetee.

Inside the museum Wilco’s Pat Sansone along with Jonathan Kirkscey, Robby Grant performed two pop-up sets in Building 5 as Mellotron Variations. Over in the Hunter Center John Hodgman and Jean Grae had the audience laughing.

Joe’s Field lineup which featured Cate Le Bon with her subtle but yet stunning stage presence was a treat to take in. The Feelies brought on Jeff Tweedy to do a rendition of Neil Young’s “Don’t Cry No Tears.” Closing out the main stage, Wilco performed as though they haven’t missed a beat even after their prolonged time away from touring. The band was hitting on cylinders Saturday night as the setlist covered the band’s deep catalog and also included two new tunes “Empty Corner” and “White Wooden Cross.”

Setlist: Hell Is Chrome, Muzzle of Bees, I Am Trying to Break Your Heart, War on War, Company in My Back, I’ll Fight, Shouldn’t Be Ashamed, Empty Corner (new song), Box Full of Letters, Remember the Mountain Bed, Hesitating Beauty, Bull Black Nova, Laminated Cat (Loose Fur), Reservations, Side With the Sides, Theologians, Someone to Lose, Impossible Germany, Red-Eyed and Blue, I Got You (At the End of the Century), Outtasite (Outta Mind),

MASS MoCA
North Adams, Massachusetts

Wilco is back in the picturesque hills of North Adams, Massachusetts at MASS MoCA this weekend to kick off their sixth Solid Sound Festival. The biannual festival will be a welcoming celebration for their fans after taking a prolonged hiatus from touring.
The grounds of MASS MoCA will feature artwork from Annie Lennox, Anselm Kiefer, Rafa Esparza, Sol LeWitt, Laurie Anderson, Robert Rauschenberg, and others.
The weekends’ lineup and festivities, which will be headlined by Wilco on two nights, will also be curated by the band. Friday night sets in the past have had themes including an all cover set, and in 2017 the band performed the double album Being There, which was voted on by the fans, in its entirety. The group followed the performance by playing 2001 classic Yankee Hotel Foxtrot front to back as an encore.
This year some lucky fans who submitted to the band’s karaoke contest will join the group on stage to sing along of course to Wilco songs. Jeff Tweedy, the frontman for Wilco, mentioned in an interview with Rolling Stone’s Simon Vozicl-Levinson that Saturday night set may showcase a new song or two.

The rest of the lineup features a variety of indie rock, jazz, and even some hip-hop this year. Courtney Barnett, Tortoise, The Feelies, The Minus 5 will be sure to draw large crowds as will all the Wilco members side projects. One of the best parts of a music festival is the exposure to acts that you may not have heard before. So check out the as many bands as you can like OHmme, Lonnie Holley, Lithics, and Mdou Moctar. Download the Solid Sound mobile app https://apps.apple.com/us/app/solid-sound-fest/id1244251191 to keep update to date on the “pop-up” sets throughout the weekend.
The weekend is not exclusive to just music as there will be the Reverb music auction, screen printing workshops, Tinytype photography, yoga with instructor Elysia Nelson, and the newly added Authors in Discussion with Cheryl Strayed, John Hodgman, and Nate Chinen. Also be sure to stop in the Euclid Records Pop Up Store for your chance to get your hands a limited supply of Jeff Tweedy’s new deluxe WARM+WARMER vinyl featuring 22 songs by Tweedy, including a bonus track “Drawing From Memory (Charlie).”

Vampire Weekend hadn’t performed in Indianapolis since their stop at the Egyptian Room back in 2012. Now on tour in support of their 2019 album Father of the Bride, Vampire Weekend performed for a sold-out audience at the Farm Bureau Insurance Lawn this past weekend along with the Los Angeles based Chicano Batman.

The beautiful evening was kicked off with Chicano Batman taking the stage. Their soulful West Coast psychedelia was on full display with their performance of “Freedom is Free” from the self-titled release in 2017.

After a brief set break, Vampire Weekend hit the stage full force with a jammed out version “Sunflower” with Ezra Koenig and Brian Robert Jones dueling back and forth on guitar riffs. It set the tone for a more rock vibe setlist throughout the night.

Their performance included a hand full of covers including a nod to “Parks and Recreation” as the band looped in the television’s theme song seamlessly within “M79.” The tribute to the show’s fictional Pawnee, Indiana and possibly cast member and Koenig’s real-life partner Rashida Jones was a perfectly executed.

Hopefully, after a night of such brilliant musical experimentation and fun, we won’t have to wait another seven years before the band comes back to Indianapolis. Make sure to catch them if they are in your city this summer. For more ticket information click here https://www.vampireweekend.com

Wilco Wants You to Join Them at Solid Sound for Live Karaoke

Wilco’s music festival Solid Sound will be on the grounds of MASS MoCA in North Adams, Massachusetts from, June 28th to the 30th. The lineup features Courtney Barnett, two sets with Tortoise, The Feelies, and many more including two sets with Wilco.

Friday night the band has always tried to do something special with their first performance. Once it was an entire set of audience-selected covers. Recently they played the whole double album Being There, and for an encore, they played Yankee Hotel Foxtrot.

This year the boys are having a contest for five to ten lucky winners to have a chance to perform with Wilco as their backing band.

Jeff Tweedy stated, “Ever wish karaoke bars had more Wilco? Do they have any? I don’t really know. But I do know that they don’t have enough songs about existential dread and self-loathing,” said Jeff Tweedy in a statement. “Sound fun? Please join us onstage so we can get Solid Sound 2019 started with some outsourced belters from the Wilco songbook. Let’s do this!”

To enter the contest, all you have to do is share a video on Instagram or YouTube with the hashtag #WilcoKaraoke of yourself performing a song that you wish to play with Wilco. Winners will perform one song with the band, get a meet and greet and rehearsal with the group, two 3-day passes to Solid Sound 2019, and an official festival artist gift bag.
