A Bittersweet Farewell to Summer Camp Music Festival 2023

Summer Camp Music Festival

Photos and recap by: Tony Vasquez

This past Summer Camp Music Festival marked the end of an era as festival founders moe. and Umphrey’s McGee bid farewell to the event in its current form. Over Memorial Day Weekend at Three Sisters Park in Chillicothe, IL, headliners Willie Nelson & Family, Goose, Excision, and over 150 artists performed for one last memorable SCamp.

Ian Goldberg, the visionary behind Summer Camp, announced a couple of weeks prior that the long-running event would take a hiatus. He promised a redefined gathering for 2024, featuring a more intimate atmosphere reminiscent of SCamp’s early days, with moe. and Umphrey’s still at the helm.

Despite the air of finality, this sense of closure only strengthened the resolve of both performers and Scampers to make Summer Camp 2023 unforgettable. Festival hosts moe. and Umphrey’s McGee exemplified this spirit through their collaborative performances, celebrating the legacy they had built together.

Umphrey’s McGee took the honor of closing out the Moonshine Stage with moe. joining them to conclude the event on a high note. Umphrey’s ended their set with a fitting cover of Simple Minds’ “Don’t You (Forget About Me).”

Numerous longtime favorites returned to the festival for this last dance in this large format at Three Sisters Park. Lotus and The Disco Biscuits kicked off the official pre-party on a chilly Thursday night of music. The Yonder Mountain String Band delivered an excellent performance early Friday afternoon on the Sunshine stage, including a special appearance of past member and fiddler Allie Kral.

Aqueous bid farewell to the festival on the Starshine stage as they prepared to go on indefinite hiatus. While Andy Frasco & The U.N.’s set on the Starshine stage was an exuberant party vibe with collaborations with members of Eggy, Maggie Rose, Saxsquatch, Sierra Hull, and a game of crowd surfing basketball.

Some of my memorable performances came from GG Magree and Mija of So Tuff So Cute collaborative project with their rebellious punk-inspired set on the Illumination Stage. Another highlight for me over the weekend was Les Claypool’s Fearless Flying Frog Brigade, with Claypool and Sean Lennon performing Pink Floyd’s Animals. Headliners Goose’s two sets on the Sunshine stage on Friday showed how far the band has come since their performance in 2019. Other stand performances on Sunday came from bluegrass singer-songwriter, mandolinist, and guitarist Sierra Hull and country music singer Maggie Rose. The two collaborated on the Campfire stage during Maggie’s set for some magical moments.

As the festival bid farewell on Sunday, Chicago Farmer started the music on the Starshine stage, which set the day’s tone for me, building with the anticipated set of the Willie Nelson & Family on the Moonshine stage. With so many people gathering to witness the 90-year-old American music legend alongside his son Lukas Nelson, captivating fans from various backgrounds with his timeless songs. During his set, he invited members of moe, Sierra Hull, and Umphrey’s McGee’s Brendan Bayliss and Jake Cinneringer to join him, singing back on “Will The Circle Be Unbroken?”

It was a bittersweet weekend overall, knowing this would be the last time the festival would be in this larger format, but I’m excited to see what they will present moving forward.

THE STRING CHEESE INCIDENT ANNOUNCES FIRST STUDIO ALBUM IN SIX YEARS

The String Cheese Incident announces their first studio album in over six years, Lend Me A Hand. The new collection of songs showcases the full depth and character of their songwriting like never before, ultimately delivering some of their most intimate and emotionally potent material to date.

A poignant yet high-spirited reflection on love, loss, and resilience, Lend Me A Hand emerged as SCI coped with such life-changing events as the sudden death of their close friend Jesse Aratow (a member of their management team for most of the band’s history). As they dreamed up a batch of songs firmly centered on their storytelling, the band joined forces with Brad Cook (Bon Iver, Hiss Golden Messenger, Nathaniel Rateliff & the Night Sweats, Waxahatchee), a producer whose distinct vision helped SCI to fully embrace the album’s rootsy simplicity.

“Every album’s a snapshot of the band at that moment, and this record turned out to be one of our most introspective,” says Moseley. “We were coming out of the pandemic and coming up on our anniversary; we’d lost someone who’s been an important part of our team for so long. All those thoughts and feelings coalesced into something that’s much more focused on the storytelling, and feels more like hanging out in the living room with us while we sing you some songs.” “Rather than trying to be flashy with the musicianship, our goal was to make sure nothing got in the way of the lyrics,” adds Nershi. “So even though we’re still a jam band at heart, all these songs can really stand on their own.”

Over the last three decades, the band has built a devoted following on the strength of their kaleidoscopic musicality and commitment to leaving audiences awestruck. Known for an immersive live show that continually pushes into unexpected terrain, the Colorado-bred six-piece handles everything from bluegrass to dubstep to psychedelia with equal parts abandon and ingenuity—a feat that’s found them sharing stages with such wide-ranging artists as Lauryn Hill, Skrillex, James Brown, Billy Strings, Perry Farrell, Sheryl Crow, Zac Brown Band, and more. But in a departure for the band—Bill Nershi (guitar, vocals), Michael Kang (guitar, mandolin, violin, vocals), Keith Moseley (bass, vocals), Michael Travis (drums, vocals), Kyle Hollingsworth (keys, vocals), and Jason Hann (percussion, programming)—SCI’s eighth studio album trades all that genre-hopping for a stripped-back form of folk-rock.

The band looks forward to watching the songs of Lend Me A Hand transform and take new shape in their live show as they gear up for a spot on Willie Nelson’s Outlaw Music Festival Tour—and for their official 30th-anniversary celebration later this year.   “It’ll be fun to see how some of these three- or four-minute tunes open up and stretch out a bit,” says Moseley.  “One of the things that’s helped us stay connected over the years is that shared love for the beauty of the creative process—we’re all still completely engaged in the pursuit of making the best music we can make, then giving the best live performance we can. If I had to guess, I’d say that the next album we put out will be 180 degrees from this one, because that’s how things tend to go with us. We just point the ship into the wind and head off onto the next adventure, whatever that might be.”

Wilco Cruel Country Tour Hits Indianapolis

Cruel Country Tour

Wilco with special guest Courtney Marie Andrews

TCU Amphitheater at White River State Park

August 14, 2022

Photos by Tony Vasquez

Sunday night at the TCU Amphitheater was the setting for Wilco’s latest appearance in Indianapolis, IN, since the Chicago-based band performed at the Murat Theatre on the Ode to Joy tour in 2019. The sextet started the set with “I Am My Mother” and “Cruel Country,” two tracks from their latest album, Cruel Country. The Indy crowd rose to their feet on the third song of the evening with the first few recognizable keyboard notes of “I Am Trying to Break Your Heart.”

Wilco, known for its deep catalog of material, seamlessly mixed newer songs with fan favorites. One shining example was the transition from the song “Via Chicago” from Yankee Hotel Foxtrot into the musical outro of “Many Worlds,” which is personally one of my favorite tracks from their latest release. I noticed that on several of the newer songs, including “Many Worlds,” the multi-instrumentalist, Pat Sansone, was able to showcase his guitar soloing chops. Of course, the guitar virtuoso Nels Clines also shredded on the solo during “Impossible Germany,” Jeff Tweedy even got in the string bending solo action on “At Least That’s What You Said.”

The band was performing as a tight machine all night to the point that even Jeff Tweedy, whose banter is of legendary status, took a back seat for most of the show. Jeff’s first words to the crowd were, “I swallowed a bug. It’s one of the hazards of summer touring.” Wilco brought the opener, Courtney Marie Andrews, to the stage to sing along on “Calfornia Stars,” from the Mermaid Avenue album with Woody Guthrie poetry set to music by Billy Bragg & Wilco. They ended with the encore with the latest single from Cruel Country, “Falling Apart (Right Now),” and “I Got You (At the End of the Century) from Being There. “
