Louisville, KY- As the crowd began to gather to catch Durand Jones & The Indications at Headliners Music Hall the band members could be seen saying hello to friends and fans who made the trip from Bloomington, IN. The band met as students at Indiana University in Bloomington and recorded their self-titled debut album. The vibe in the venue was laid, but thatโ€™s to be expected for a Thursday night crowd. The show was the bands second to last spring tour stop before they will play a couple of dates in New Orleans and Bloomington in May and hit the run again in June.

Up first was Western Kentucky based The Savage Radley. Lead by songwriter Shaina Goodman on guitar and with her twangy vocals singing about her account of her homeland in Murray, KY. This narrative is most relevant in the song โ€œLittle River Town.โ€

Shaina was in a talkative mood throughout the night covering a couple of different topics including apologizing for only having wrinkled concert t-shirts for sale. Before playing their last couple of tunes, she asks the crowd how many Hoosiers made it out to the show. The crowd loudly responded, and she wasnโ€™t surprised given the fact the Durand and the boys started in Bloomington, IN. She responded by saying she liked that Durand comes from Louisiana because that makes him a real southern boy.

Throughout the night the four-piece band effortless blends the lines of Southern rock and indie rock to create their unique sound, which most of the material with the exception for a couple of new tunes come from the 2017 release Kudzu.

After a brief stage setup, Durand Jones & The Indications hit the stage. The sextet group includes Durand Jones on vocals, Blake Rhein on guitar, Aaron Frazer on drums/vocals, Kyle Houpt on bass, Steve Okonski on keys, and Alex on Saxophone. The guys open their set with the opening track โ€œMake a Changeโ€ off their 2016 self-titled debut album. The crowd immediately began to dance along with the bands dynamic and groovy sounds. The nightโ€™s material comes mostly from the recently released American Love Call. Personally, the stand out tune from that material is โ€œMorning in America,โ€ which is the opening track to the latest album. Durandโ€™s smooth vocals tell a story of bleak America with powerful lyrics that hit on issues of drug addiction and our divide country landscape. As the band’s jams during Blake Rheinโ€™s guitar solo and the song fades to an end, Jones stands arms crossed and staring off in contemplation. During the song โ€œGroove Babeโ€ Jones did a call and response with both Alex on saxophone and Frazer on the drums too much of the crowd’s delight. Throughout the night the band switches lead vocals between Durandโ€™s booming vocals and Frazerโ€™s falsetto covering material from both their albums. They closed the night with a terrific cover of The Beatles โ€œDonโ€™t Let Me Down.โ€
The band will be on the road with several shows this summer. For more ticket info check out their website: https://durandjonesandtheindications.com

Jeremy Garrett at B-Chord Brewing Company

Bluemont Va. April 7th 2019,

In the midst of an intense tour with the Infamous Stringdusters, Jeremy Garrett had a small break and was kind enough to stop at the B chord Brewing Company on short notice to perform an amazing solo show! The B-Chord Brewing Company is a truly welcoming spot. It is attractive and relaxing, with fresh brewed cold beer, some light fare, and guaranteed fine music whenever possible!

The crew at B-Chord Brewery are some of the kindest people you ever want to meet, which lays the groundwork for a fantastic vibe.

As Jeremy Garrett came out on the stage, you noticed a guitar, a mandolin, and of course a fiddle. Having seen the Stringdusters numerous times, I knew this would be a great show.  However, never having seen Jeremy solo, I had no real idea of what to expect!

Jeremy started the set with a solo guitar song that had me thinking that this was going to be a really nice singer/songwriter night. Boy was I wrong about that! As Jeremy began to play the 2nd song, he told us about his new solo release coming out in the late summer/early fall and explained his project with loops. The first โ€œloopedโ€ song of the evening was a bunch of fiddle tunes all played together that was called โ€œBaker’s Jam.โ€ Watching him orchestrate this song was reminiscent of watching a juggler with multiple knives in the air. It was awesome!!  If youโ€™re not familiar with loops, it is the technique of recording one instrument, then while it is playing back in a โ€œloopโ€, you play another instrument along with along with it.  Jeremy took this to another level.  He started with the guitar, layered the mandolin over it, and then played the fiddle over top those loops.

It was like being at an amusement park with rides that took you up and then slowed you back down, keeping your interest throughout the entire set.

Jeremy launched the second set with such intensity it had everybody on the edge of their seats! Near the end, Jeremy invited a special guest on stage, Gina Furtado, a top-notch banjo player. It is wonderful to witness two musicians, who have never played together, perform as if they’ve been playing together all of their lives.

The entire evening was perfect, and I really want to thank the staff at B-Chord Brewing Company, especially Marty Dougherty, for hosting such a great show at such a great spot! I also want to thank Jeremy Garrett for his kindness and the awe-inspiring music. Drew Becker did his usual magic with the Great Sound that we had all night long!

Keep your eyes out for Jeremyโ€™s new solo release and any solo shows that he might haveโ€ฆ you will not be disappointed!

Last but not least, I want to say; โ€œif you are anywhere within hours of Bluemont Virginia, I highly recommend you make a trek!โ€

Mike Gordon Band takes on The Orange Peel in Asheville, NC – 3/9/19

–words and photos provided by Roger Patteson of Type 2 Photography

Mike Gordon brings along his trademark funk, weird, and stylish as he hits the road for stop number two of a thirteen-night tour in Asheville, North Carolinaโ€™s monarch club for live music, The Orange Peel.ย  The previous night held the tour opener in Atlanta at The Variety Playhouse and show goers caught the debut of new songs โ€œAcid Manโ€ and โ€œSughn Never Setsโ€.ย  Asheville was also treated to three new tunes with โ€œPut Down The Phoneโ€, โ€œI Am Randomโ€, and โ€œMy Favorite Mistakeโ€. The Mike Gordon Band makes tunes via Scott Murawski (guitar), Robert Walter (keyboards), John Kimock (drums), Craig Myers (percussion), and, of course, Mike (bass).

The crowd brought extra energy dance skills ย during โ€œ555โ€, โ€œYarmouth Roadโ€, โ€œSugar Shackโ€, and โ€œCrazy Sometimesโ€ as the Phish fans in the house contemplated their 26 night summer tour.ย  First set highlights included โ€œLooking For Cluesโ€, a 1980โ€™s trippy and funky classic by Robert Palmer and longtime MGB favorite, and the set closer โ€œGo Awayโ€ which has come on strong in Mikeโ€™s repertoire since 2017.ย  Another OGOGO track, โ€œWhirlwindโ€, would open the second set and book end with a stretched โ€œCrazy Sometimesโ€ followed by a โ€œRuby Sohoโ€ encore.
