A summer time staple for past few years has been to visit Louisville, Kentucky’s Forecastle Festival. Now in its 18thyear, the music festival boasts an incredibly diverse musical lineup meshing up Americana, EDM, hip-hop, pop, and rock for the festivalgoer’s to experience.

Friday’s lineup was kicked off with The Mattson 2 on the Boom Stage. The identical twin’s connection on stage was present in their laidback improvisational performance. The WFPK Port Stage featured many great artists throughout the three-day including The Artisanals whose high-energy rock songs set the tone for the acts to come all weekend on the stage.  The two frontwomen of Lucius have always been a treat to witness live. They certainly didn’t disappoint with their intoxicating harmonies and stunning wardrobe. Other mentionable sets on the first day were the performances by the flashy electrofunk duo ChromeoPortugal. The ManLiz Cooper & The Stampede, and Jungle whose funky rhythms and smooth vocals had the crowd dancing under the overpass on the Ocean Stage.

Catching PJ Morton’sset on the Mast Stage on Saturday was like a flashback to the vibes of Motown. The Los Angeles based The Marias were a pleasant escape from the heat over on the Ocean Stage with dreamy vocals on songs likes “Cariño,” and “Only in My Dreams.” Both Maggie Rogers and Anderson .Paak & The Free Nationals delivered the top-notch performances of the second day.

The indie-rock trio from New York City, Sunflower Bean, kicked off Sunday on the Mast Stage with singer/guitarist Nick Kivlen and singer/bassist Julia Cumming trading vocals while drummer Jacob Faber held down the beat. Mt. JoyAnderson EastCHVRCHES, and Andrew Bird all had impressive sets over on the Boom Stage. Andrew Bird’s performance of “Bloodless” was flawless despite the blazing hot temps. LETTUCE brought the junk over on the Ocean Stage while Tyler Childers provided the southern country vibe on the Mast Stage. Closing out the day and the festival was The Avett Brothers, who are no strangers to Forecastle. They were a perfect ending to the weekend on the Waterfront Park., until next year Forecastle.

Wilco Announce New LP ‘Ode to Joy’

Ode to Joy is Wilco’s 11th studio album, and it will be released Oct. 4, 2019, on dBpm Records. The album will feature 11 new songs written and produced by Jeff Tweedy and recorded by Wilco at The Loft this past January.

“The record is, in a weird way, an ode; this terrible stuff is happening, this deepening sense of creeping authoritarianism that weighs on everybody’s psyche on a daily basis, and you’re allowed to feel a lot of things at once. And one thing that is worth feeling, that is worth fighting for, is your freedom to still have joy even though things are going to sh*t.” – Jeff Tweedy

Listen to “Love is Everywhere (Beware)”

“Love is Everywhere (Beware)” is the first single from the lp and fans can receive it instantly with any preorder via https://wilcoworld.net/otj/

Wilco will tour North America and Europe in support of Ode to Joy for details and tickets: wilcoworld.net/shows

Solid Sound Festival 2019 Day Three – Jeff Tweedy, Lonnie Holley, OHMME, The Autumn Defense, Nels Cline, Quindar, Wand

July 7, 2019

Day One, Two, & Three Gallery: https://jamsplus.smugmug.com/TonyVasquezPhotography/Solid-Sound-Festival-2019/

The last day of Solid Sound Festival at MASS MoCA started off with heavy rain causing the first half the day to be relocated into the museum gallery space. Despite the shuffling locations and jammed packed interior spaces the music continued pretty much without much delay. The MASS MoCA staff and crews handle the less than ideal situation quite well.

Rough Francis got the music going by blasting the gallery space with their high energy sound. Lakou Mizik over in Building 5 got the large audience dancing to the soulful energy.

Sunday’s lineup followed suit with past Solid Sounds as it was full of Wilco’s side projects. Kicking things off in the Hunter Center Nels Cline & Julian Lage perform Room For Interpretation as they accompanied the short films of Stan Brakhage + Charles & Ray Eames. Wilco keyboardist Mikael Jorgensen and James Thomas played together as Quindar. John Stiratt and Pat Sansone of Wilco performed a special show of their project The Autumn Defense with the accompaniment of string arrangements for the first time live. CUP which showcased Nels Cline and his wife Yuka C Honda collaboration as the couple explored soundscapes together.

Wrapping up the festival was Jeff Tweedy and his friends. The band’s lineup included his son Spencer Tweedy, Liam Kazar, and James Elkington. The setlist was a mix of Tweedy’s recent solo projects, older Tweedy material, and a few covers. Several artists from the weekend joined Jeff during the closing set. His bandmates from Wilco, OHMME, Scott McCaughey, his son Sammy Tweedy all helped out. Also making a surprise appearance was Amelia Meath of Sylvan Esso as the two sang “You & I.” The threat of rain held off until nearly the end of his set. As Tweedy was singing “Let’s Go Rain” he said out to the crowd “Look at that stupid rainbow. I don’t believe in stuff like that.” He then told Jeremy Roth his lighting guy to remind him to give him a raise as that was pretty impressive referring to the rainbow. For the final number of the festival, everyone joined Tweedy on stage to perform The Band’s “I Shall Be Released,” which was the perfect ending to the weekend.
