Wilco Announce New LP ‘Ode to Joy’

Ode to Joy is Wilco’s 11th studio album, and it will be released Oct. 4, 2019, on dBpm Records. The album will feature 11 new songs written and produced by Jeff Tweedy and recorded by Wilco at The Loft this past January.

“The record is, in a weird way, an ode; this terrible stuff is happening, this deepening sense of creeping authoritarianism that weighs on everybody’s psyche on a daily basis, and you’re allowed to feel a lot of things at once. And one thing that is worth feeling, that is worth fighting for, is your freedom to still have joy even though things are going to sh*t.” – Jeff Tweedy

Listen to “Love is Everywhere (Beware)”

“Love is Everywhere (Beware)” is the first single from the lp and fans can receive it instantly with any preorder via https://wilcoworld.net/otj/

Wilco will tour North America and Europe in support of Ode to Joy for details and tickets: wilcoworld.net/shows

Solid Sound Festival 2019 Day Three – Jeff Tweedy, Lonnie Holley, OHMME, The Autumn Defense, Nels Cline, Quindar, Wand

July 7, 2019

Day One, Two, & Three Gallery: https://jamsplus.smugmug.com/TonyVasquezPhotography/Solid-Sound-Festival-2019/

The last day of Solid Sound Festival at MASS MoCA started off with heavy rain causing the first half the day to be relocated into the museum gallery space. Despite the shuffling locations and jammed packed interior spaces the music continued pretty much without much delay. The MASS MoCA staff and crews handle the less than ideal situation quite well.

Rough Francis got the music going by blasting the gallery space with their high energy sound. Lakou Mizik over in Building 5 got the large audience dancing to the soulful energy.

Sunday’s lineup followed suit with past Solid Sounds as it was full of Wilco’s side projects. Kicking things off in the Hunter Center Nels Cline & Julian Lage perform Room For Interpretation as they accompanied the short films of Stan Brakhage + Charles & Ray Eames. Wilco keyboardist Mikael Jorgensen and James Thomas played together as Quindar. John Stiratt and Pat Sansone of Wilco performed a special show of their project The Autumn Defense with the accompaniment of string arrangements for the first time live. CUP which showcased Nels Cline and his wife Yuka C Honda collaboration as the couple explored soundscapes together.

Wrapping up the festival was Jeff Tweedy and his friends. The band’s lineup included his son Spencer Tweedy, Liam Kazar, and James Elkington. The setlist was a mix of Tweedy’s recent solo projects, older Tweedy material, and a few covers. Several artists from the weekend joined Jeff during the closing set. His bandmates from Wilco, OHMME, Scott McCaughey, his son Sammy Tweedy all helped out. Also making a surprise appearance was Amelia Meath of Sylvan Esso as the two sang “You & I.” The threat of rain held off until nearly the end of his set. As Tweedy was singing “Let’s Go Rain” he said out to the crowd “Look at that stupid rainbow. I don’t believe in stuff like that.” He then told Jeremy Roth his lighting guy to remind him to give him a raise as that was pretty impressive referring to the rainbow. For the final number of the festival, everyone joined Tweedy on stage to perform The Band’s “I Shall Be Released,” which was the perfect ending to the weekend.

Solid Sound Festival 2019 Day Two – Wilco, The Feelies, The Minus Five,Cate le Bon, Tortoise, OHMME, Mduo Moctar, Milo

July 6, 2019

Day One & Two Photo Gallery: https://jamsplus.smugmug.com/TonyVasquezPhotography/Solid-Sound-Festival-2019/

Day two of Solid Sound Festival jammed packed lineup included a variety of kid actives, artist signings, ax throwing, pop-up performances, yoga, plenty of food options, art, and of course a ton of live music.

A few personal standout sets included Mdou Moctar‘s performance in Courtyard C as he played his blend of contemporary Saharan music with mesmerizing loops all the while shredding with a joyful smile. Another fantastic set in Courtyard C was Chicago based OHMME. The rendition of the title track from 2018 release Parts echoed hauntingly throughout the open spaced courtyard setting.

The Minus Five impressive lineup lead by Scott McCaughey‘s included Kurt Bloch, Linda Pitmon, Joe Adragna, and Mike Mills & Peter Buck of R.E.M. Even the Dream Syndicate’s Steve Wynn joined the group for a couple of tunes in the jammed packed Courtyard D.

Tortoise the Chicago based instrumental quintet played a regular set after their Friday night performance in the Hunter Center where they performed a live score to the silent sci-fi film Le Jetee.

Inside the museum Wilco’s Pat Sansone along with Jonathan Kirkscey, Robby Grant performed two pop-up sets in Building 5 as Mellotron Variations. Over in the Hunter Center John Hodgman and Jean Grae had the audience laughing.

Joe’s Field lineup which featured Cate Le Bon with her subtle but yet stunning stage presence was a treat to take in. The Feelies brought on Jeff Tweedy to do a rendition of Neil Young’s “Don’t Cry No Tears.” Closing out the main stage, Wilco performed as though they haven’t missed a beat even after their prolonged time away from touring. The band was hitting on cylinders Saturday night as the setlist covered the band’s deep catalog and also included two new tunes “Empty Corner” and “White Wooden Cross.”

Setlist: Hell Is Chrome, Muzzle of Bees, I Am Trying to Break Your Heart, War on War, Company in My Back, I’ll Fight, Shouldn’t Be Ashamed, Empty Corner (new song), Box Full of Letters, Remember the Mountain Bed, Hesitating Beauty, Bull Black Nova, Laminated Cat (Loose Fur), Reservations, Side With the Sides, Theologians, Someone to Lose, Impossible Germany, Red-Eyed and Blue, I Got You (At the End of the Century), Outtasite (Outta Mind),

Solid Sound Festival 2019
June 28-30
MASS MoCA
North Adams, Massachusetts

Wilco is back in the picturesque hills of North Adams, Massachusetts at MASS MoCA this weekend to kick off their sixth Solid Sound Festival. The biannual festival will be a welcoming celebration for their fans after taking a prolonged hiatus from touring.
The grounds of MASS MoCA will feature artwork from Annie Lennox, Anselm Kiefer, Rafa Esparza, Sol LeWitt, Laurie Anderson, Robert Rauschenberg, and others.
The weekends’ lineup and festivities, which will be headlined by Wilco on two nights, will also be curated by the band. Friday night sets in the past have had themes including an all cover set, and in 2017 the band performed the double album Being There, which was voted on by the fans, in its entirety. The group followed the performance by playing 2001 classic Yankee Hotel Foxtrot front to back as an encore.
This year some lucky fans who submitted to the band’s karaoke contest will join the group on stage to sing along of course to Wilco songs. Jeff Tweedy, the frontman for Wilco, mentioned in an interview with Rolling Stone’s Simon Vozicl-Levinson that Saturday night set may showcase a new song or two.

The rest of the lineup features a variety of indie rock, jazz, and even some hip-hop this year. Courtney Barnett, Tortoise, The Feelies, The Minus 5 will be sure to draw large crowds as will all the Wilco members side projects. One of the best parts of a music festival is the exposure to acts that you may not have heard before. So check out the as many bands as you can like OHmme, Lonnie Holley, Lithics, and Mdou Moctar. Download the Solid Sound mobile app https://apps.apple.com/us/app/solid-sound-fest/id1244251191 to keep update to date on the “pop-up” sets throughout the weekend.
The weekend is not exclusive to just music as there will be the Reverb music auction, screen printing workshops, Tinytype photography, yoga with instructor Elysia Nelson, and the newly added Authors in Discussion with Cheryl Strayed, John Hodgman, and Nate Chinen. Also be sure to stop in the Euclid Records Pop Up Store for your chance to get your hands a limited supply of Jeff Tweedy’s new deluxe WARM+WARMER vinyl featuring 22 songs by Tweedy, including a bonus track “Drawing From Memory (Charlie).”
