Trey Anastasio Acoustic at The Ryman

Photos and words by Roger Patteson of Type 2 Photography
Setlist adapted from Phish.net

10/27/19 – Sunday night church service at The Ryman was delivered by none other than a seated Trey Anastasio! Those in attendance were saved by a 20 song set and 5 song encore of Phish originals all from the tune of a big, hollow body 6 string.

Being a solo show, adaptations were made to each song to make up for the missing percussion, base, keyboards, and rhythm that is normally present when these songs are played. Some of that looked like a foot tap on the stage; a wrist pop on the back of the guitar; some wooing and bepopping by Trey; and a whole lot of backup vocals from the crowd. On that note, the crowd on crowd crime varied from everyone telling everyone to be quiet with a “shhhh” to everyone following Trey’s command to sing along. For some, there was a sense of quiet intimacy that wanted to be maintained among the pews and wooden floors while others were going to sing aloud no matter what. Never a dull moment with these lovable fans.

By far, the highlights of the night occurred with the storytelling. Whether it was fuzzy Farm Aid memories of crippling high hang out sessions with Willie Nelson and Neil Young and their herbal foray into planning music; updates on Bella; playing “Free Bird” with Wynnona Judd; or trying to keep up the strumming with Ricky Skaggs, the crowd was absolutely glued to the laughter and emotion coming from Trey.

Greensky Bluegrass in cavernous form

Photos/Words by Roger Patteson of Type 2 Photography

September 25th

The Caverns of Pehlham, TN has become one of the state’s hottest (a damp 72 degrees) concert venues in the country. The lineups continue to amaze and “sold out” continues to don social media and websites when referencing the acts they have booked.

Greensky Bluegrass recently did some digging of their own paying homage to the passing of Robert Hunter with “Brokedown Palace” and a string heavy nod to the cover song apropos “Cavern” by Phish. Shenanigans would ensue as Anders Beck (dobro) worked the crowd over with “Casual Wednesday”.

The historic Keeneland grounds in Lexington, Kentucky hosted the inaugural Railbird Music Festival. The festival did an excellent job showcasing Kentucky throughout the festival and with AC Entertainment curating the lineup, the weekend festival felt like it hit the ground running out the gate.

The festival featured two main stages, The Limestone, and The Elkhorn, on opposite ends of the grounds. The smaller Burl Stage which showcased several Lexington area bands was in between the two main stages. There were cooling areas, bourbon cocktails, a variety of food options, kids activities, and horse-petting.

Saturday’s lineup which featured some amazing women lead performances. Mavis Staples who recently turned 80 earlier this summer brought her soulful gospel vibes to the crowd by singing her message of love and compassion. Brandi Carlile owned the opening day with her set on the Limestone main stage. She delivered a fantastic version “The Joke” and excellent cover of Led Zeppelin’s “Babe, I’m Gonna Leave You.” She then joined the Old Crow Medicine Show for a few more songs over on the Elkhorn stage immediately following her performance including a cover of Dolly Parton’s “Jolene.”

Sunday’s early highlight for me was the set by the Futurebirds on the Elkhorn stage. The highly energetic band performed with so much joy you could feel the positive energy coming off the stage and into the crowd. Later that afternoon over on the Limestone stage Gary Clark Jr. proceeded to play a blistering set to the already hot audience. Local songwriter and perform Tyler Childers drew a massive crowd over on the Elkhorn stage as he closed down the stage for the weekend. Childers performed material from his recently released Country Squire including “House Fire” and “Creeker.” Closing the festival over on the Limestone stage was the Irish songwriter Hozier. They were a fitting end to a fabulous weekend of music that featured genres of Americana, bluegrass, folk, soul, and rock and roll. We can’t wait for next year to see what Railbird does next summer.
