I had photographed Tash Sultana once before at a festival in Memphis. That performance stayed with me. The way Sultana could command a stage alone, building songs piece by piece while moving effortlessly between instruments. So when the Australian multi-instrumentalist arrived at Everwise Amphitheater in Indianapolis, I already knew the evening would be worth experiencing.
Daisy The Great opened the show with energy and confidence. Their songs carried a lightness that fit the evening as their harmonies floated through the amphitheater while the crowd slowly filled in.
When Tash Sultana walked onto the stage, the reaction was immediate. There are performers who entertain, and there are performers who pull people into their world. Sultana belongs in the second group.
Watching Sultana perform is a reminder that musicianship can still be the main attraction. Every song felt alive, capable of changing direction at any moment.
The show was built on gifted musicians. An attentive crowd and a beautiful summer evening. For a few hours, the distractions of everyday life faded into the background. The music took over. The crowd followed willingly.
I’ve photographed many concerts over the years, and I knew from that first encounter in Memphis that Tash Sultana would deliver something memorable. Once again, that expectation was met. On a beautiful night in Indy, Sultana turned Everwise Amphitheater into a place where her fans shared the same rhythm, the same feeling, and the same experience.
Sometimes that is all a great concert needs.
