Saturday night in Louisville, My Morning Jacket lit up the historic Louisville Palace Theatre for the second night of their five-show hometown residency in support of their new album Is. With a sold-out crowd of 2,800 fans packed into the ornate, Spanish Baroque-styled venue where legends like Bob Dylan, Prince, Bob Weir, and others have all graced the stage, Jim James and company made it clear they are on absolute fire right now.
The night started with local neo-psychedelic rockers The Future Killers, who set a perfect tone for musical transcendence. The Palace’s vaulted ceiling, complete with 139 sculpted faces of historical figures and an imitation nighttime sky, was a magical setting for the evening of music.
Jacket opening with “Beginning From the Ending” off Is, the band immediately captured the room’s energy and never let go. A blend of new material, deep cuts, and jaw-dropping covers followed. Highlights included their take on Prince’s “I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man”—played for the first time since 2016. Fitting for a Saturday night in Louisville, the band tore through Bob Weir’s “One More Saturday Night.” Then, during the encore, Jacket performed an electric cover of Pet Shop Boys’ “West End Girls” that had the entire crowd moving.
Midway through the set during “Lemme Know,” the unexpected happened as the band’s sound cut out. But rather than deflating the momentum, the moment turned into something unforgettable. Fans instinctively took over, singing as Jim James stepped forward to lead a moving rendition of “Bermuda Highway.” As the last notes echoed, the sound roared back to life, fueling the finish to the night that included thunderous versions of “Wordless Chorus,” “Highly Suspicious,” and more.
Jim James channeled every ounce of his energy straight into the music, forging a connection with the crowd that was palpable from the front row to the back balcony. It became an experience of shared catharsis, celebration, and pure sonic joy.
With two unforgettable nights now in the books, the excitement only builds for what’s in store for Sunday night’s setlist.
