Sunday night at the TCU Amphitheater was the setting for Wilco’s latest appearance in Indianapolis, IN, since the Chicago-based band performed at the Murat Theatre on the Ode to Joy tour in 2019. The sextet started the set with “I Am My Mother” and “Cruel Country,” two tracks from their latest album, Cruel Country. The Indy crowd rose to their feet on the third song of the evening with the first few recognizable keyboard notes of “I Am Trying to Break Your Heart.”
Wilco, known for its deep catalog of material, seamlessly mixed newer songs with fan favorites. One shining example was the transition from the song “Via Chicago” from Yankee Hotel Foxtrot into the musical outro of “Many Worlds,” which is personally one of my favorite tracks from their latest release. I noticed that on several of the newer songs, including “Many Worlds,” the multi-instrumentalist, Pat Sansone, was able to showcase his guitar soloing chops. Of course, the guitar virtuoso Nels Clines also shredded on the solo during “Impossible Germany,” Jeff Tweedy even got in the string bending solo action on “At Least That’s What You Said.”
The band was performing as a tight machine all night to the point that even Jeff Tweedy, whose banter is of legendary status, took a back seat for most of the show. Jeff’s first words to the crowd were, “I swallowed a bug. It’s one of the hazards of summer touring.” Wilco brought the opener, Courtney Marie Andrews, to the stage to sing along on “Calfornia Stars,” from the Mermaid Avenue album with Woody Guthrie poetry set to music by Billy Bragg & Wilco. They ended with the encore with the latest single from Cruel Country, “Falling Apart (Right Now),” and “I Got You (At the End of the Century) from Being There. “
Setlist: I Am My Mother, Cruel Country, I Am Trying to Break Your Heart, Hints, War on War, Handshake Drugs, If I Ever Was a Child, Via Chicago ( outro with “Many Worlds”), Story to Tell, At Least That’s What You Said, Hummingbird, Bird Without a Tail/Base of My Skull, Jesus Etc., Impossible Germany, Love is Everywhere (Beware), California Stars ( Billy Bragg & Wilco cover with Courtney Marie Andrews), A Lifetime to Find, Box Full of Letters, I’m Always in Love, The Late Greats
Encore: Falling Apart (Right Now), I Got You (At the End of Century)

Santana at the Ruoff Music Center in Noblesville, IN. Photo by Tony Vasquez on August 3, 2022, for Jams Plus Media.
The 74-year-old legendary guitarist Carlos Santana returned to the road after postponing six dates of his Miraculous Supernatural 2022 tour due to a health scare in Detriot on July 5. Santana, along with Earth and Wind and Fire, had stopped at Ruoff Music Center on July 8, just days after the collapse in Detriot, with only the opener performing before Santana ultimately postponed his performance until August 3.
A healthy and energetic Santana addressed the crowd, thanking everyone for being in attendance and mentioning that he wanted to ensure that he could perform with his full intensity when he took the stage. The band performance was clicking from the start as they kicked off their set with “Soul Sacrifice,” “Jin-go-lo-ba,” “Evil Ways,” “Black Magic Woman/Gypsy Queen,” and “Oye com va” before taking a brief break to wish band roadie Mike a happy birthday. Santana looked and sounded fantastic for the entire set, showcasing his classic sound. The encore kicked off with “Toussaint L’Ouverture,” followed by a tremendous drum solo by Carlos’s wife, Cindy Blackman. They closed the set with a cover of “Get Together” by The Youngbloods, which echoed the theme of unity that Santana had mentioned throughout the evening.
Setlist: Soul Sacrifice, Jin-go-lo-ba (Babatunde Olatunji cover), Evil Ways (Willie Bobo cover), Black Magic Woman/ Gypsy Queen, Oye com va (Tito Puente cover, Happy Birthday to You (for band roadie Mike), Europa (Earth’s Cry, Heaven’s Smile), She’s Not There (The Zombies cover), Spill the Wine (Eric Burdon & War cover), Marbles (John McLaughlin cover), Peace on Earth/Angel of Sunlight, Joy, Move/Mueuette, Life Is for Living, Corazón espinado, Maria Maria, Foo Foo
Encore: Toussaint L’Ouverture (with Cindy Blackman Santana drum solo), Han ’em High ( Dominic Frontiere cover), Smooth, Roadhouse Blues (The Doors cover), Love, Peace and Happiness (The Chamber Brothers cover), Get Together (The Youngbloods cover)

Having seen The Wood Brothers a dozen times at this point, I knew it would be a great evening of music with the brothers Oliver and Chris Wood and Jano Rix on drums. The Rock the Ruins lineup also included the duo of the David Wax Museum and Boston-based Guster. The evening of music started off hot, but as the sun began to set, the temps cooled off as the music continued to entertain the crowd at Holiday Park. Here are a few photo highlights from the evening.

Friday night in Noblesville, IN was the first of a three-day run at Ruoff Music Center aka Deer Creek. This was also my first concert back at the venue since 2019 and a special night as the crowd could be seen wearing birthday hats for bassist Mike Gordon’s 57th birthday. The three days at the venue are the last dates of the spring leg of the tour before the band hits the road again for the summer leg starting back up on July 14th in Mansfield, MA.
