BUKU 2017 – New Orleans, LA

Buku 2017

Music and Arts Festival

March 10-11, 2017

Mardi Gras World – New Orleans, LA

words by Walker Wopat – Photos by Jordan Wall

The sixth year of the Buku Music and Arts festival certainly lived up to the hype created by the first five.  Upon arrival at the venue Friday afternoon, the energy was already contagious and buzzing through the air as hundreds of people coagulated into the multiple entrances.  Waiting to enter the small venue, deep bass and rhythms were already audible, and it was a shared excitement for everybody waiting in line.

Held in New Orleans, home of many large and small festivals, Buku is unique in how its main genre of music is electronic, and caters mostly to DJ’s and MC’s.  Unlike many music festivals in New Orleans that feel like their purpose is for people to come together and appreciate music, the vibe that Buku gives is that its mainly for people to come together to just have a good time.  However, regardless of someone’s preference for what they want out of a festival, anyone can find a way to have a wonderful weekend at Buku.  Located at Mardi Gras World, not only do you have incredible music to listen to, you also have exceptional scenery. Upon entering the venue, large draping nets which serve as hammocks for buku-goers to rest and relax are to the left, and directly past that is scaffolding which artists use to create beautiful graffiti.  The venue is directly on the Mississippi River, which gives a gorgeous reflection of the city and festival lights at nighttime and gives individuals a backdrop for their weekend at Buku that they’ll never forget.  Barges are constantly gliding by the venue, while the 30,000 Buku-goers travel back and forth along the compact and sometimes claustrophobic venue, which features three main stages. The power plant, which is outdoors, is the main stage, which you see immediately after entering the venue.  The Ballroom and Float Den are the two other main stages, and are both inside the two main buildings at the venue.  There are also two additional smaller stages, one for DJs and one for musical showcases.  VIP guests have access to the S.S Buku, an offshore ferry which provide them with an additional stage.

Buku has always drawn big names in the rap and EDM industry, and this year was no different.  Artists such as Travis Scott, Deadmau5, and Zeds Dead made it out to perform this year on Friday night.  Travis Scott’s performance was very unique and hyped in its own way.  Not only did he perform hits such as “Antidote” and “Through The Late Night,” he added his own personal unique dynamic to the show by allowing fans onto the stage, and having them dance with him and encouraging them to jump into the crowd to crowd-surf whenever the beat dropped.   Other artists such Deadmau5 allowed for the crowd to just enjoy themselves and vibe to some smooth, laid back electronic jam music.  To close out Friday Night, Zeds Dead’s performance in the packed and heated Float Den certainly left everyone in attendance in need of a water break.  One highlight of the incredible show was their performance of their hit song “Symphony.”   Saturday Night featured great shows from artists such as Zhu, Vince Staples, and New Orleans’s own $uicideBoy$.  Preceding Zhu in the Float Den, Cashmere Cat had a memorable set which included many remixes of songs by artists such as Kanye West and Miguel.  Zhu certainly followed up as expected, consistently making the crowd go berserk throughout the performance.  Not only did the DJs show out on Saturday night; the rappers certainly did not disappoint.  Vince Staples and $uicideBoy$ both had exceptional shows, performing hit songs along with new music.  $uicideBoy$ are originally from New Orleans, so the show was in a way a homecoming for them, and the love they showed the crowd was reciprocated fully.  21 Savage closed the night out in the Ballroom, which was so packed that people had to listen from outside the multiple entrances.

All in all, the Buku Music and Arts Festival certainly lived up to its reputation for being a fun escape for the weekend in New Orleans to listen to big names in rap and EDM in a compact, intimate environment.  Even though some may feel the “party till we drop” vibe takes precedence over appreciating the actual music, Buku still offers an incredible experience for all who choose to attend.

On June 16, Fleet Foxes will release Crack-Up (Nonesuch Records), its long-awaited and highly anticipated third album. Crack-Up comes six years after the 2011 release of Helplessness Blues and nearly a decade since the band’s 2008 self-titled debut. Fleet Foxes has released the album track “Third of May / Ōdaigahara,”  a nearly nine-minute epic powered by piano and electric twelve-string guitar, string quartet, and the group’s trademark sparkling harmonies. In addition, the band has announced new tour dates, including their first North American shows since October 2011. More tour information, including North American ticket pre-sale*, is provided below. Crack-Up pre-orders are available now from iTunes and nonesuch.com, where “Third of May / Ōdaigahara” may be downloaded instantly. Pre-orders of the album at nonesuch.com also include an exclusive, limited-edition print featuring artwork by Hiroshi Hamaya.

All eleven of the songs on Crack-Up were written by Robin Pecknold. The album was co-produced by Pecknold and Skyler Skjelset, his longtime bandmate, collaborator, and childhood friend.  Crack-Up was recorded at various locations across the United States between July 2016 and January 2017: at Electric Lady Studios, Sear Sound, The Void, Rare Book Room, Avast, and The Unknown. Phil Ek mixed the album, at Sear Sound, and it was mastered by Greg Calbi at Sterling Sound. Fleet Foxes is Robin Pecknold (vocals, multi-instrumentalist), Skyler Skjelset (multi-instrumentalist, vocals), Casey Wescott (multi-instrumentalist, vocals), Christian Wargo (multi-instrumentalist, vocals), and Morgan Henderson (multi-instrumentalist).

Fleet Foxes’ self-titled debut made a profound impact on the international musical landscape, earning them Uncut’s first ever Music Award Prize, and topping numerous “Best of” lists, including Rolling Stone’s 100 Best Albums of the 2000’s and Pitchfork’s 50 Best Albums of 2008.  Fleet Foxes is certified Gold in North America and Platinum in both the UK and Australia. The follow-up album Helplessness Blues was met with the same critical praise as its predecessor (MOJO five stars, Rolling Stone four stars, Pitchfork Best New Music); that album debuted at No. 4 on the Billboard Top 200, went Gold in the UK, and earned the band a GRAMMY nomination.

Wilco Winterlude at The Chicago Theatre

It may have been a rainy Thursday night in Chicago, but that wasn’t going to dampen Wilco’s second night of a four-night run at the historic Chicago Theatre. The Wilco Winterlude marks their first appearances since last year’s European tour.

The night opens with Normal American Kids, If I Ever Was a Child, and Cry All Day, all three opening numbers coming from their latest album Schmilco. A Wilco concert would not be complete without some humorous banter coming from lead singer, Jeff Tweedy. His take on how to actually pronounce the new album with disdain was classic. The setlist from the second night was a good mixture of the band’s deep catalogue.

Tweedy’s vocals on At Least That’s What You Said and Resverations were clear and crisp in the historic in the theatre. Witnessing Nels Cline performing in concert is always a treat. Even Tweedy had to tip his hat to Mr Cline after his shredding performance on Impossible Germany. There were several beautiful moments when the songs along with stage lighting added to the emotional impact of the songs. Theologians sounded fresh with the added fuzzy in Tweedy’s guitar.

On the band’s final encore, they came out and played an epic version Spiders (Kidsmoke). Jeff got the crowd to participate by singing along to his guitar part South American style.  It was a great finish to the night.

The Winterlude’s Saturday and Sunday nights are already sold out but, the band will be busy this year supporting their latest release Schmilco. With upcoming appearances at the Big Ears Festival, New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, Eau Claire, and their own festival at Mass MoCA Solid Sound Festival in June. More info can be found here: Wilco Tour

Setlist: Normal American Kids, If I Ever Was a Child, Cry All Day, Radio Cure, Company in My Back, The Joke Explained, Misunderstood, Someone to Lose, At Least That’s What You Said, Reservations, Impossible Germany, Either Way, We Aren’t the World (Safety Girl), Forget the Flowers, Jesus, Etc., Locator, Dawned on Me, Theologians, I’m the Man Who Loves You, Hummingbird, The Late Greats,

Encore: War on War, Pickled Ginger, Red-Eyed and Blue, I Got You (At the End of the Century), Outtasite (Outta Mind)

Encore 2: Spiders (Kidsmoke)

Voodoo Dead 02-09-2017 The Hamilton, Washington D.C.

The Northeast was getting walloped by the strongest winter storm of the season thus far on Thursday. Blinding snow and strong winds whipped across New York, Connecticut and Massachusetts as the powerful winter storm rapidly intensified just off the coast. While all of this was going on, Washington D.C. was preparing for a different kind of storm! Voodoo Dead was about to slam the city with some of the hottest versions of Grateful Dead and Mardi Gras songs in a long time! The band was just off the charts with talent, however here is what really reached in and grabbed me without me even realizing it at first! These amazingly talented musicians were here on a mission! They were obviously here to play music, have fun, and share the love in manner that would raise the vibe in a city that right now, well let’s just say, in my humble opinion, has a slightly less than positive vibe! For me, the vibe started as soon as they hit the stage! Jackie Greene & Jeff Chimenti were at the keyboards when I called over and asked for a photograph…. Jackie leaned over and gave Jeff a big hug and a kiss and the vibe was on for the rest of the night! There was smile after smile coming from the stage all night long, and that my friends, is infectious! The crowd was as warm as the performers, everyone was there to enjoy and share in the love! You cannot say anything about the vibe of the Artist and the crowd without saying that the staff at the Hamilton were just as warm and pleasant! Thank You to the Hamilton for hosting such great music with such a great attitude!

The 1st set opened with a beautiful version of Ernest Ranglin’s “Nana’s Chalk Pipe” and then it was straight into 3 great songs from the Grateful Dead! The band then segued down to New Orleans in honor of Mardi Gras with a classic “Congo Man Chant” (The Congoes) into “Get Up, Stand Up” (Bob Marley and Peter Tosh) into Bob Dylan’s Grammy Award Winning “Gotta Serve Somebody” and then back into “Get Up, Stand Up” to end the set.

After a short break the band hit the stage with a wonderful version of “Help on the Way” into “Slipknot” in classic Grateful Dead style! What a way to start the set! Slipknot then went straight back into the Mardi Gras vibe with “Hey Pockey Way” (Ziggy Modeliste, Art Neville, Leo Nocentelli, George Porter, Jr.) but then it was right back to some more classic Grateful Dead with “Scarlet Begonias” into “Tennessee Jed” and then a really interesting “Loose Lucy” to end the set! They could not just stop there, for an encore, there was a very appropriate version of The Grateful Deads “Deal”! Washington D.C. “Don’t You Let That Deal Go Down”!

10th DelFest Lineup is Here

The 2017 Delfest lineup has been announced! This year’s 10th annual Delfest will take place Memorial Day weekend at the Cumberland, MD fairgrounds. This year’s festival boasts another stellar lineup of music. The festival begins with its Del Academy the week prior to the music, which will run May 25-28th.

The festival will kick-off its return with the Del Academy, held May 21-24th. The academy is an intensive music learning experience with some of the finest bluegrass musicians as instructors. You can purchase academy tickets here. Musicians of all ages and ability are encouraged to attend.

One thing Delfest has become known for is its wide array of bands — spanning old timey bluegrass, newgrass, jamgrass, and this year a little country too. Most notable on the lineup this year is the return of Trey Anastasio Band. TAB headlined the 6th annual festival in 2013. The band put on a hell of a show that year and festival veterans are excited to see them return. Another new addition to Delfest this year will be special guest Dierks Bentley with the Travelin’ McCourys, also headlining the show. Not to mention the festival’s namesake Del McCoury will of course be tearing up the stage several
times throughout the weekend with the Del McCoury Band. Gov’t Mule will be making its debut this year, and upstate NY natives and Finger Lakes Grassroots Festival creators, Donna The Buffalo will return this year; having not appeared since the 4th annual Delfest in 2011.

The lineup this year will also include: Béla Fleck & Chris Thile, Leftover Salmon, The Infamous Stringdusters, Steep Canyon Rangers, Sierra Hull, Jeff Austin Band, Cabinet, Joe Craven & The Sometimers, Hot Rize, and many more!

This festival has rightfully been tagged the family-friendly festival of the season by those who have attended in previous years because, DelFest doesn’t just offer family camping areas, they offer a complete family vacation experience where children are encouraged to join their music lovin parents for a weekend of arts & crafts, jambands and bluegrass.

All ticketing info and available camping options can be found on their website at www.delfest.com.
