When Taylor Goldsmith (Dawes) and M.C. Taylor (Hiss Golden Messenger) announced their A Night of Two Taylors tour would stop in my hometown of Columbus, Indiana, I knew it was a must-see event. The two alt-folk veterans, each known for their evocative songwriting and soul-stirring performances, chose a remarkable setting for their inaugural concert—The Oil Can. Formerly known as North Christian Church, the venue is a national historic landmark designed by famed architect Eero Saarinen. Its transformation into a performance space provided a fittingly intimate atmosphere for the stripped-down acoustic set. Kicking off the evening was alt-country artist Jonny Fritz, whose wry storytelling and laid-back charm set the tone for a night of deeply personal music. Goldsmith and Taylor took the stage with easy camaraderie, immediately breaking the ice with a joke about almost driving to Columbus, Ohio, instead. Their set was a masterclass in quiet intensity—no elaborate production, just two seasoned musicians trading songs, harmonizing, and sharing stories. The audience responded in kind, offering the sort of respectful silence that lets every lyric sink in.
The night ended on a powerful note with a stirring rendition of Neil Young’s Rockin’ in the Free World, an unexpected but welcome closer that left the room buzzing. With The Oil Can now on the map as a promising new venue, I can’t wait to see what other unforgettable performances Columbus, Indiana, has in store.Duo Setlist:
