Wilco hosted their biennial Solid Sound Festival which kicked off last Friday, June 28 on the grounds of MASS MoCA in North Adams, MA. The festival started off with a solo pop-up set by Melbourne, Australia artist Courtney Barnett inside MASS MoCA. She was surrounded by the artwork of artist Trenton Doyle Hancock during her performance. Courtney would be busy Friday evening playing two more times on Joe’s Field. She joined Wilco on stage during their Live Karakoe set to play a killer rendition of “Handshake Drugs” from the 2004’s A Ghost Is Born. The song escalated into a blistering wall of sound created by Nels Cline and Barnett battling on guitars.

Day one also included sets from the Expandards, Lithics, Rafiq Bhatia, Tortoise playing live to the film “La Jetee.” The night concluded with DJ Funkhouser spinning music in Courtyard C for the late night festival goers.
